Item Tracing the Discourse on Overtourism(The Bucharest University of Economic Studies In partnership with: Paradigm Publishing Services, 2025) Balliu, Brian; Zbuchea, AlexandraThis study analyzes the discourse surrounding overtourism by synthesizing academic perspectives and media representations, highlighting the dynamics and diverse effects of this modern phenomenon. This study aims to critically analyze the evolution of overtourism as an interdisciplinary topic, examining its ecological, socio-cultural, and economic implications. The methodology comprises two analyses: a comparative computational media analysis using Media Cloud to investigate overtourism coverage in major global tourism destinations and a bibliometric analysis conducted with VOSviewer to assess scholarly outputs obtained from Scopus. The comparative media analysis from 2020 to 2024 reveals varying national perspectives on overtourism, highlighting ethical concerns in German and Swiss media in contrast to sensationalist and conflict-oriented representations in Spanish and French outlets. Japanese coverage prioritizes domestic issues, whereas British reports highlight international viewpoints. The bibliometric analysis from 2013 to 2024 reveals a rise in scholarly attention before the pandemic, followed by stabilization in the post-pandemic period. Key thematic clusters encompass strategic management, heritage conservation, environmental sustainability, urban transformation, social impacts, and post-pandemic tourism dynamics. The academic discourse emphasizes the impact of overtourism on ecological degradation, community tensions, cultural commodification, and economic disparities, underscoring the need for integrated governance and community involvement in effective tourism management. The findings indicate that overtourism has significant negative effects, including the exacerbation of socioeconomic inequalities, ecological stress, and cultural degradation. Additionally, tourismophobia is rising, leading to conflicts. Furthermore, they underscore the role of grassroots movements in promoting sustainable and equitable tourism practices. The study concludes by advocating for comprehensive governance frameworks, community-oriented solutions, and interdisciplinary research to promote sustainable and resilient tourism.Item Individuals’ behavioral intention to use car sharing (CS): from environmental consciousness to socio-psychological drivers(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2025) Vătămănescu, Elena-Madalina; Dincă, Violeta-Mihaela; Cegarra-Navarro, Juan-Gabriel; Gazzola, Patrizia; Amelio, StefanoPurpose By scrutinizing different types of factors conducive to the behavioral intention to use car sharing (CS), the present paper looked into the influences of the environmental consciousness (i.e. environmental angle), the continuous improvement of CS platforms (i.e. technological angle), smart mobility (i.e. infrastructure angle) and the perceived benefits of CS and electronic trust in CS (i.e. individual and psychological angles). Design/methodology/approach On purpose to provide an integrative outlook, a questionnaire-based survey with over 400 subjects coming from young generations (i.e. Gen Y and Z) has been conducted in 2023. The collected data were processed and analyzed by means of a partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique (PLS-SEM) by employing SmartPLS 4. Findings The analysis allows for multiple results. Environmental consciousness, continuous improvement of CS platforms and smart mobility have a positive influence on the perceived benefits of CS. The relationship between the continuous improvement of CS platforms and the E-trust in CS and the relationship between the impact of E-trust in CS and the behavioral intention to use CS are positive. Perceived benefits of CS have a positive influence on the behavioral intention to use CS. Originality/value On the one hand, in terms of theoretical implications, the paper integrates multiple factors in a common framework, simultaneously considering social, psychological, technological and environmental dimensions in addressing the behavioral intention to use CS. On the other hand, the study entails practical implications and implicit takeaways for CS platform companies, which can inform business practitioners and transportation planners.Item Sustainability in the Knowledge Economy: A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Trends and Policy Perspectives(Sciendo, 2025) Ciuciuc, Victor-Emanuel; Vătămănescu, Elena-Mădălina; Gheorghiu, AndaIntegrating sustainability into managerial strategies has become a key research area in the knowledge economy, reflecting the growing need for organizations to adopt environmentally and socially responsible business models. An outlook using Bibliometrix(Elsevier, 2024) Vătămănescu, Elena-Mădălina; Dominici, Gandolfo; Ciuciuc, Victor-Emanuel; Vițelar, Alexandra; Anghel, Flavia GabrielaCar sharing (CS) and smart mobility have emerged as pivotal components for a sustainable transformation in urban transportation, standing out as central topics in the discussions on sustainable mobility solutions. Nevertheless, the increasing interest from scholars, CS companies’ owners, and policymakers in car sharing services as a viable response to the sustainable urban transport has availed rather mixed considerations, thus calling for further scrutiny. The current endeavor thus seeks to advance a systematic literature review of the body of knowledge correlatively addressing the issues of various forms of smart mobility and car sharing. Four major research questions are envisaged, namely: What are the bibliometric characteristics of the literature related to smart mobility and car sharing? What is the focus of this literature in terms of key concepts? What are the limitations of the existing body of literature? and What are the implications of this literature in terms of future research avenues? With a view to providing pertinent answers, emphasis will be laid on the insights, critique, and transformative redefinitions of the literature in the field via a bibliometric analysis and structured theme-based review. The SPAR-4-SLR protocol is employed while the data retrieved from the Scopus database was processed with the Bibliometrix package (i.e., Biblioshiny) of the R study program. Derived from the thematic mapping and the identified clusters, six key research topics (i.e., car sharing through the lens of urban mobility management, innovative business models and governance, sustainable transportation and e-car sharing, smart mobility and multimodality, sustainable mobility, public transport, and collaborative consumption, climate change and electric vehicles and transport policy and automotive industry) are thoroughly discussed in terms of added value and limitations. The findings manage to clarify the multiplexity of links between the two constructs, by shedding light on the motor, basic, niche, emerging and declining themes which are worthy of further consideration within a structured research agenda. Additionally, they point to the fact that the issues of smart mobility and car sharing are still producing mixed or fragmented conclusions in terms of socio-economic, technological and environmental impacts, calling for further investigation. Manifold implications of the state-of-the-art in the field are brought to the attention of scholars and practitioners interested in achieving a better understanding and integration of car sharing and smart mobility in the broad transport ecosystem.Item Sustainability policies adoption within Italian Michelin‐starred restaurants: From external drivers to costs(ERP Environment and John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2024) Gazzola, Patrizia; Vătămănescu, Elena-Mădălina; Zamai, Matilde; Fassio, FrancoThe purpose of the research is to investigate the increasing importance of the role of sustainability in high-end restaurants, specifically in those awarded Michelin stars. The focus is on the role sustainability plays as a crucial element in the state-of-the-art of fine-dining business given that restaurants are challenged to reconsider the noteworthiness of new sustainable imperatives. The study is based on a questionnaire survey carried out with over 70 owners and chefs from Italian Michelin-starred restaurants. The results show a clear tendency towards sustainability and an increasing attention towards this trend, emphasizing its peculiarities for the restaurant industry, which is indicates profound changes. More specifically, 35% of the variance in internal sustainability policies adoption is explained by external drives related to sustainability and customers' demands of sustainability. The data collected relies on an Italian sample, but the results are useful to understand the sustainability imperatives for the Michelin-stars restaurants worldwide as the Italian food service industry is often deemed as iconic. The study advances new insights into the future of the sustainable restaurant industry. The results of research are based on a novel research design and empirical survey capturing the state-of-the-art of sustainability policies adoption in the case of Michelin-starred restaurants.Item The importance of sustainable leadership towards employee engagement and wellbeing(Springer, 2024) Vintilă, Florina; Vătămănescu, Elena- MădălinaRunning a sustainable workforce implies a combination of various factors including social responsibility, economic responsibility, transparency, innovation, and commitment. Key factors in a sustainable business should be considered a strong leadership and employee engagement. A main assumption is that a sustainable leadership significantly influences employee engagement and wellbeing, a strong leadership being critical for the success and sustainability of a business., A strong leadership can create a culture where collaboration and innovation are well values, fostering teamwork among employees while motivating their employees to work together towards a common goal. Adding data from the most recent surveys conducted by the biggest consulting firms about the workforce reimagined leads to a workplace where authentic and pertinent leadership styles are prone to spur engagement and wellbeing and, as recent studies show, the present and the future urge leadership to rethink the human resources approach, the employee experience, by focusing on people, collaboration, and close communication.Item Great Reset—Opportunity or threat?(Springer, 2024) Vătămănescu, Elena-Mădălina; Gandolfo, Dominici"This book gathers revised papers presented at the 2024 International Symposium of the Business Systems Laboratory, held in Palermo, Italy on January 11–12, 2024. In the last four years, the world has seen dramatic changes in virtually every aspect of global society. We have seen a rapid transformation of social systems and, since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, an unprecedented acceleration of the socioeconomic upheavals already in place - disruptive socioeconomic changes that have since been dubbed “The Great Reset"" by the World Economic Forum. The book applies scientific rigor to discuss and debate these disruptive transformations and identify new ways to address the global economic and social challenges of our time from a systemic perspective. It sheds light on the various interactions between natural, social, and economic systems in these turbulent times by pursuing a multidisciplinary but integrative approach that encompasses e.g. management, information science, psychology, economics, engineering, and political science. Accordingly, the book will be of interest to readers from these fields, from both an academic and managerial standpoint."Item Integrating smart mobility and electric car sharing adoption in a common framework: Antecedents and mediators(Elsevier Publishing, 2023-07-27) Vătămănescu, Elena-Mădălina; Nicolescu, Luminița; Gazzola, Patrizia; Amelio, StefanoThe present research set out to provide an answer to various calls for further analysis of the car sharing consumer behavior. In this sense, the investigation has advanced an integrative conceptual model by studying the antecedents of electric car sharing adoption, based on two general attitudinal influencers environmental consciousness and technology embracement and two mediators – the perceived benefits of car sharing and the importance attached to smart mobility. The empirical undertaking relied on a questionnaire-based survey with 399 Romanian respondents from generation Z. According to the findings, the proposed model has confirmed a substantive effect of environmental consciousness and technology embracement on smart mobility and a less powerful effect of the latter on electric car sharing adoption. The results have both theoretical and practical implications given that achieving a paradigm shift towards smart mobility and electric car sharing adoption requires substantial changes in social habits and orientation, as well as attitudinal transformations in terms of environmental and technological dynamics. The study originally contributes to the extant literature by interrelating different attitudinal factors as relevant drivers for car sharing adoption within a comprehensive framework. From a practical perspective, while focusing on electric car sharing from a context-driven angle, the investigation adds knowledge about the behavioral intentions for car sharing usage in a country where the phenomenon is yet to develop. In this sense, the findings support providers of car sharing services and authorities in their promotion strategies regarding car sharing services as a form of sustainable transportation apposite for smart cities.Item The impact of OECD's Development Assistance Committee (DAC) aid commitments for education on human development in Asian countries and its implications for textile industry(The National Research-Development Institute for Textile and Leather (INCDTP) , 2022-10) Gilliani, Durdana Qaiser; Naeem, Muhammad Zahid; Spulbar, Cristi; Ejaz, Abdullah; Birău, Ramona; Anghel, Lucian Claudiu; Florescu, IonEducation and health are considered a cornerstone for obtaining targeted development in any society. Moreover, both sectors promote prosperity greatly. In this changeable epoch, people are thought out as the real wealth of any nation and this wealth with good human capital serves the economy very efficiently and productively. This research study aims to analyse how Development Assistance Committee (DAC) aid commitment for education along with institutional quality is effective for the human development of selected Asian economies. A panel data set over 2011–2018 is used for this analysis in Asian countries. GMM results show a significant and positive relationship between aid commitment for education and the human development of these economies. A more interesting result is that financial development seems to boost up human deployment in the selected Asian economies. The development of the textile industry is significantly influenced by education, especially considering the effects of OECD's Development Assistance Committee (DAC) Aid Commitments for education on human development in Asian countries. There is a dire need to reconsider more allocation of resources and aid to education and health to utilize these inflows at the maximum level for targeted development.Item Sustainable behaviour of B Corps fashion companies during Covid-19: A quantitative economic analysis(Elsevier, 2022-09-14) Ferioli, Matteo; Gazzola, Patrizia; Grechi, Danieli; Vătămănescu, Elena MădălinaThis paper investigates whether or not Italian Certified B Corps® in the fashion industry achieved levels of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and financial performance that are comparable to listed companies in the same industry during the Covid-19 pandemic. After a review of the literature concerning B Corps, CSR and the circular economy, as well as some coverage of pandemic impacts, a quantitative approach is used to analyze the data empirically. Based on the data available, the study incorporated the entire population of Italian listed companies and B Corps in the fashion industry. Moreover, this study confirms the relationship between CSR and financial performance. The availability of sustainability documents other than the required social responsibility report does not directly affect a company’s profitability, but they are necessary for the long term. The results also confirm the positive relationship between sustainability certification and higher financial performance, as the most sustainable companies were also the most profitable. Certified B Corps® declare their willingness to adopt circular economic principles to the same extent as non-certified listed companies. Moreover, the results show that consumers mainly remember the information disclosed on a company’s homepage; therefore, managers should publish more there. However, they should not underestimate the importance of their sustainability report because it is an effective social communication tool, especially in the long term. Finally, obtaining the B Corp certification will allow companies to inform stakeholders of their social responsibility and achieve higher financial results.Item Traditional Crafts. A Literature Review Focused on Sustainable Development(Sciendo Faculty of Management (SNSPA), 2022) Zbuchea, AlexandraWe witness a revival of the crafts due to complex changes in mentalities and society, but also related to the benefits and positive implications that traditional crafts could offer to contemporary societies and economies. Also, traditional crafts are compatible with the concept of sustainable development, which gives them another boost. The present paper represents one of the very few literature reviews in the field of traditional crafts aiming to map the knowledge we possess on traditional crafts. It documents a significant gap between professional and academic research, with the former being visible at local/national levels, but also an increased interest in the field, especially in understanding the future role that traditional crafts could play in communities and economies.Item Crude oil futures to manage the price risk of textile equities : an empirical evidence from India(The National Research-Development Institute for Textile and Leather (INCDTP), 2022) Kumar, B. R. Pradeep; Kumar, K. Abhaya; Pinto, Prakash; Hawaldar, Iqbal Thonse; Spulbar, Cristi; Birău, Ramona; Anghel, Lucian ClaudiuThe textile sector in India is the oldest manufacturing sector. As the raw materials for this sector are sourced from the petrochemical industries, the earnings of Indian textile companies are dependent on the crude oil price. The crude price in the international market has become more volatile and hence, the equity price of Indian textile companies has become more volatile. This study aims to develop two price risk management strategies for Indian textile equities. Using the vector autoregressive (VAR) model, a price forecast model, further the possibility of cross hedge for textile equities with the help of crude futures is examined using the Granger causality test and Pearson correlation statistics. The results of the study showed that crude futures price in India is one of the price determinants of textile industry stock prices.Item Social Reporting Impact on Non-Profit Stakeholder Satisfaction and Trust during the COVID-19 Pandemic in an Emerging Market(MDPI, 2022-10-13) Nemțeanu, Sefora Marcela; Dabija, Dan Cristian; Gazzola, Patrizia; Vătămănescu, Elena MădălinaAttracting resources to achieve established goals makes social reporting necessary in relation to an organization’s stakeholders, and reports on the social impact of resource use and activities have an essential role in increasing stakeholder satisfaction and trust. The COVID-19 pandemic emphasized the importance of sustainable development goals and transparent social reporting for different categories of stakeholders. This paper aims to identify the social reporting dimensions that influence the satisfaction and trust of the primary stakeholders of non-profit organizations in an emerging market (Romania), i.e., managers, employees, members, volunteers, donors, and collaborators. The results reveal the positive influence COVID-19 reporting had on stakeholder satisfaction. The lack of formal reporting has a weak yet statistically significant negative influence on stakeholder satisfaction, thus positively influencing the perceived need for external and internal auditing. Stakeholder trust in an organization is strongly and positively influenced by satisfaction with the organizational activity and internal auditing and is negatively influenced by a lack of formal reporting.Item A context-driven approach on coping with COVID-19 : from hiding knowledge toward citizen engagement(Wiley, 2021-01) Cegarra Navarro, Juan Gabriel; Vătămănescu, Elena Mădălina; Martínez Martínez, AuroraThe current study sets out to investigate the relationships among three interconnected dimensions, that is hiding knowledge by the Government, the realized absorptive capacity (RACAP) and citizen engagement, giving way to a context-driven approach. Emphasis is laid on the effects engendered by the lack of official information transparency in the critical context of COVID-19 outbreak at the global level, through the lens of the Spanish example. The relationships among the variables are analyzed by means of an empirical study conducted with 151 Spanish subjects with a view to identify whether the impact of knowledge hiding by the Government on citizen engagement can be mitigated and to acknowledge how the presence of RACAP impacts citizens in limiting the spread of COVID-19 information disorders.Item Social economy enterprises contributing to the circular economy and the green transition in Romania(CIRIEC Spain, 2023) Barna, Cristina; Zbuchea, Alexandra; Stănescu, Simona MariaRecently, there is a new European Union commitment to the potential of the social economy which is a pioneer in job creation linked to the circular economy that will be further leveraged by the mutual benefits of supporting the green transition and strengthening social inclusion. Considering this general context, we propose in this paper an exploratory research aiming to investigate the potential of the Romanian social economy sector as part of a circular economy approach that could advance the green transition in the following years. Our paper is based on the findings of preliminary systematic content analysis for the identification of the social enterprises in Romania which include circular economy and/or green economy in their business model, and on qualitative research based on semi-structured in-depth interviews with the social economy organizations’ managers. We have highlighted five good practice examples (Recicleta, Atelierul de Pânză, Educlick/Reconect, Remesh, and Bio&co Farm), which clearly show that combining the principles of social economy with the ones of circular/green economy is a strategy that might lead to overcoming the current challenges of the society. Our investigations represent the first approach to this topic, aiming to understand the specific challenges of the circular or green economy and social economy models when joining forces together for sustainable development in the context of an emerging social economy, as is the case of Romania.Item Before and after the outbreak of Covid-19 : linking fashion companies’ corporate social responsibility approach to consumers’ demand for sustainable products(Elsevier, 2021-09) Vătămănescu, Elena Mădălina; Dabija, Dan Cristian; Gazzola, Patrizia; Cegarra Navarro, Juan Gabriel; Buzzi, TaniaThe current exploratory endeavour sets out to scrutinize the relationships between the corporate social responsibility (CSR) approach of fashion companies, their strategic CSR communication, corporate reputation, and consumers’ propensity towards buying sustainable products. The study elaborates on consumers’ perspective on these variables, comparing two-time frameworks, before and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The empirical research was performed on 977 Millennials and Gen Zers, thus extending previous studies based on the generational theory. Emphasis was placed on the fashion sector as one of the industries most challenged by the pandemic, with Italy being one of the most affected European countries. Scrutiny relied on a questionnaire-based survey; data being processed via structural equation modelling (SEM) technique. The findings reveal that consumers attach great importance to the social and environmental sustainability practices applied by companies (i. e., circular economy issues, location of apparel production, organic production of raw materials, pollution generated during production, respect of workers’ rights and health, and use of recycled materials) and to the attributes of targeted products, even since the spread of the virus. The empirical evidence has substantive implications for scholars, professionals, and companies, urging that sustainability priorities are critical to favourable consumer behaviour, and implicitly to business survival.Item A bibliometric analysis of a four-construct framework: internationalization, business strategies, digital technologies (AI, blockchain, cloud computing), and digital transformation(Tritonic, 2023-10) Biea, Elena AdrianaIn the dynamic business landscape of 2023, the rapid adoption of digital tools and technologies, including ChatGPT 4 and advanced AI software, is reshaping companies' operations and strategies. One is driven by the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics, focusing on a constant increasing efficiency, while the other is driven by the public opinion’s expectations for a fair development in respect to environmental, social and economic factors. Apparently, two paradigms collide at present: the one of the digital transformation meant to innovate business models in order to satisfy a continuously growing demand of products and services, and the one of addressing social and environmental challenges. In reality, the two concepts are mutually reinforcing, as digital tools can and should be used in the framework of sustainable business approaches and the catalyzer of the digital transformation, the IT industry, could become the promoter of sustainable management using new technologies. We explore in this paper the perception of sustainability by Romanian IT managers and their orientation towards sustainable management approaches, considering the economic, social, environmental and technological dimensions. The results present a heterogeneous landscape dominated by economic and political conditionality, with a strong orientation towards education in the sector as a source of sufficient workforce, leaving room to further discussions on how the industry considered to be the source of all current disruptions could become the engine of future sustainable business models.Item Sustainability trends in the fast fashion industry(Tritonic, 2023-10-27) Pătruți, PetraThe Fast Fashion industry is a highly polluting industry generating much concern in the academic world. The paper maps the global sustainable trends in the fast fashion market found in 2 databases, Scopus and Web of Science, from January 2000 till July 2023 and contains a literature review of these trends and dimensions. The fact that we want to offer a complex view of the actual trends in the global fashion industry reflects our research gap, which may significantly impact tomorrow's sustainability. The trends are also further discussed and addressed and will be of high value as they better understand the barriers to adopting these sustainable trends on larger scales, leading practitioners to announce proactive solutions for a better and more sustainable future. From a theoretical point of view, we want to expand the knowledge of what the sustainability of the fashion industry on a global level can look like based on different components and dimensions. Similarities were found in analyzing the trend from the two databases as general directions for the international trends.Item The Romanian Consumer attitudes and awareness linked to sustainability in the fast fashion industry(Tritonic, 2022) Pătruți, PetraSustainable fashion has been gaining more and more attention in the last few years. The fast fashion industry is raising many questions regarding the demand and real need for collections and clothes purchases yearly. Although some companies are starting to take a call of action regarding these issues, at the other end of the purchase chain lies the consumer's attitude and awareness of the topic, as consumers play a significant role in reaching a more sustainable future in the fast fashion industry. Considering this, more and more academicians have started researching more and more the possibility of achieving sustainability in the fashion industry in the last decade. The investigation's purpose is to understand better the level of sustainable awareness and attitudes of Romanian consumers regarding fashion purchases. Other objectives are to identify the perceived barriers regarding adopting sustainable purchase behavior and the potential triggers/motivation to adopt a more sustainable behavior from the consumer's point of view. As for the methodology, a qualitative study was developed, aiming for both fashion-passionate and non-passionate respondents, where the research instrument was the focus group. The element of originality lies in the fact that the study will take place in Romania. In this ex-communist country, the consumer mentality focuses more on price than ethical reasoning. Interestingly enough, we discovered that some Romanian consumers working as fashion specialists had little to no idea about the effects of the fast fashion industry from a sustainability point of view. The main barriers for Romanian consumers were the prices, design, and quality of sustainable items, the absence of legal regulations, and education towards sustainability. This research contributes to providing more awareness regarding the Romanian consumer's awareness level, attitudes, and behavior regarding sustainable fast fashion.
