    A conceptual review of the higher education system based on open innovation (OI) perspectives

    The open innovation paradigm has evolved from its incipient form, namely Schumpeter's new production function from 1912, to the current context of a global network of societies, including virtual communities that produce innovative ideas and industry applications through knowledge transfer. The role of industry-university cooperation and networks is widely recognized within the current academic approach. However, the context of higher education, its characteristics, and business application are not thoroughly explained from the Open Innovation (OI) perspective. The debate and further understanding of OI, industry-university cooperation, and the accurate application of academic knowledge to the business world and society are academics' main concerns nowadays, our research being a beginning step. The research objective is to present the evolution of the innovation concept from the higher education perspective through a qualitative review of existing studies. The contribution of this paper is linked to the proposed higher education service life cycle framework for academics based on the current needs for innovation, accessibility, and global integration.

    Accounting Information Systems as Mediator for Digital Technology and Strategic Performance Interplay

    Digital technology (DT) has been broadly studied in industry and in scholarly research. This study aimed to examine the use of digital technology in the attainment of strategic performance and considered the mediating role of the accounting information systems (AISs) between them. Furthermore, this study explored the moderation of digital innovation in the linkage between DT and strategic performance. For data collection, 326 questionnaires were collected, and quantitative methods and random sampling techniques were used. The results showed that digital technology is directly associated with strategic performance. The findings also confirm that AISs play a mediating role, and digital innovation plays a moderating role in the association between digital technology and strategic performance. The results of this research encourage businesses to utilize opportunities for growing advanced technologies and developments in the industry to take up novel digital technologies, to advance their digital abilities to grow to be innovation leaders, and to boost the strategic performance of their firms. This study is one of the first pieces of research to provide information on how the latest technologies could have an influence in making innovative products/services and, afterward, boost firms' strategic performance. This study also fills a gap in the literature regarding the driving factors of strategic performance by defining the mediating role of AISs and the moderating role of digital innovation in the association between dynamic factors and performance. The outcomes of this research demonstrate that AISs are extremely helpful and have an influence on the strategic performance of electronics firms.

    An empirical review of public policies on the sector of SMEs in the European Union

    The paper aims to provide with a close picture of the SME public policies in one of the most prominent capitalist economies of the world, that of the European Union. In order to do this, a qualitative analysis has been undergone, on the basis of the following indicators: access to financial resources for SMEs, regulatory and legal frameworks for SMEs, and public assistance on information and knowledge about markets. Since there is no prior research on the subject, the implications of this paper have impact on the theory, practice and policy making. The results of the content analysis suggest that there is a contemporary structure to the European SBA, with a focus on a persistent business approach, based on the results of scientific research and market studies involving the problems raised by the now compact European SME industry. In the end, it must be acknowledged that the present research is only preliminary, and to better understand the mechanisms behind the European policy, further studies on the subject are necessary. Nevertheless, the paper has managed to point out that public policy in the SME industry represents one of the most important aspects of the EU-28 new economic direction.

    Artificial intelligence and sustainable development during the pandemic: An overview of the scientific debates

    The current work aims to analyze the main themes related to artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainable development during the pandemic period. This study provides an overview of the specialized literature related to AI and sustainability from the beginning of the pandemic through 2023. The present paper analyses scientific literature emphasizing both artificial intelligence's positive and negative impacts on sustainable development objectives (SDGs). To conduct the research, we employed bibliometric analysis and text-mining techniques to identify the major themes in the literature indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Firstly, we used descriptive measures to identify the authors' impact, the article production by country, the main keywords used, and other descriptive data. We further used data reduction methods based on coword analysis (such as multiple correspondence analysis) on authors' keywords to show patterns in the themes explored in the literature. Bibliometric analysis was supplemented by text mining using Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) and structural topic modeling on abstracts to provide a comprehensive view of scientific debates on AI and sustainable development. Our research has identified various themes in the literature related to AI and sustainable development. These themes include social sustainability, health-related issues, AI technologies for energy efficiency, sustainability in industry and innovation, IoT technologies for smart and sustainable cities, urban planning, technologies for education and knowledge production, and the impact of technologies on SDGs. We also found that there is a significant positivity bias in the literature when discussing the impact of AI on sustainable development. Despite acknowledging certain risks, the literature tends to focus on the potential benefits of AI across various sectors. In addition, the analysis shows a growing emphasis on energy efficiency, which is facilitated by the use of AI technologies. Our study contributes to a better understanding of current scholarly discussion trends and emerging scientific avenues regarding AI and sustainable development. It also highlights the areas where research is needed and the implications for practitioners and policymakers.

    Circular Economy and Decision Models among European SMEs

    While targeting waste reduction and maintaining the value of products and resources in the system as much as possible, undertaking circular economy practices at the company level is a way of achieving entrepreneurial sustainability. This paper explores entrepreneurial decision models for adopting circular economy practices, focusing on European SMEs. Decision tree models are applied on data from Flash Eurobarometer 441 in order to uncover business strategies in relation to the implementation of circular economy practices at the company level and with the optimal level and nature of investments in the circular economy for improving economic performances of companies. The main findings of the article offer a better understanding of the relation between characteristics of European SMEs and their decisions in the field of circular economy. Such results are relevant from both macro and micro perspectives, as they can be used for customizing circular economy programs and intervention strategies for various groups of SMEs, as well as for supporting sustainable entrepreneurial decisions.

    Competitiveness and sustainable development in public services

    The last years were of profound transformation in public services that knows more or less the challenge from the private sector. A second dimension of competitiveness for the public services staring from 2007 was the free access of the citizens to at least education and health services in European Union. The paper aims to show the evolution of the cohabitation of the public and private sectors on the services of public interest, their development and evolution in different regions. Identifying and highlighting the key issues in competitiveness and quality of the services provided, will give us the main lines for the further development and public policies that should be considered. Considering the cohesion policy of European Union, an analysis of the public and private sectors in public services in Romanian counties could drive us to a conclusion about the affordability and the quality of the services. Using the statistics it can be show the regional distribution of the service providers especially for education, health, water supply and other services. The integrated analysis we offer a global picture of the regional potential and development. Based on the findings the public decision makers could better set up the sectorial public policies and the public spending. Never the less, the European support could be also directed to increase the quality and efficiency of the public services.

    Convergent Insights for Sustainable Development and Ethical Cohesion: An Empirical Study on Corporate Governance in Romanian Public Entities

    The global financial crisis was decisive in reanalyzing the role of corporate governance based on the accountability and ethics of governance practices and its impact on sustainable development. The study aims to analyze the relevance of and the interdependencies between financial governance assessment indicators and income efficiency with synergetic effects on sustainable development and social cohesion, offering a distinct contemplation on errors in governance and financial reporting. Deviations concerning the accuracy of financial statements, flaws in the process of budget creation and budgetary execution, poor implementation of internal control systems, non-compliance with procedures of public procurement contracts, and ineffectiveness in sound financial management represent barometers for assessing managerial accountability in the public sector. This study is based on data reported by the Romanian Court of Accounts processed with the principal component analysis and proposes a global efficiency index as a benchmark indicator barometer in order to analyze the influence of managerial accountability and sustainable reporting compliance on revenue reported by public institutions in Romania. The results of the study are of empirical importance and explore the constant need to evaluate managerial accountability and ethics, with an emphasis on error, in order to improve public governance and enhance corporate accountability.

    Corporate Social Responsibility in the Telecommunication Industry-Driver of Entrepreneurship

    Beyond the conventional understanding of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a voluntary obligation for promoting triple-bottom-line CSR, development-oriented CSR is emerging and requires empirical investigation. This organisation-level research fills this gap by exploring development-oriented CSR as a driver of entrepreneurship in Nigeria. Arising from the review of the literature, human capital theory and stakeholder theory provided theoretical groundings for the study. The empirical study provides an enhanced understanding of development-oriented CSR that incorporates entrepreneurship into the extant literature. The target comprised multiple stakeholders in the Nigerian telecommunication industry, from which a sample of 369 responses were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The five tested hypotheses showed mixed results. The stakeholder management and economic dimensions of development-oriented CSR were found to have significant positive effects on entrepreneurship. However, the environmental, national, and social dimensions do not have significant positive effects on entrepreneurship. Overall, it was found that development-oriented CSR is a potential driver of entrepreneurship in the Nigerian telecommunication industry, but the predictability is weak (15%). The study concludes with practical implications and recommendations for further research in this multidisciplinary field.

    Customer Engagement and Customer Relationship Management Capabilities' Effects on Innovation Performance and Customer Distrust's Moderating Role

    This research aims to investigate how customer relationship management capabilities (CRMCs) improve customer engagement and innovation performance. Customer engagement is also tested as a mediator between CRM capabilities and innovation performance. Furthermore, the distrust moderating role was studied towards the relationship between CRMCs and customer engagement. Data were collected from 491 owner/managers of SMEs working in Saudi Arabia. The findings revealed that CRMCs positively predict customer engagement and innovation performance. Customer engagement directly affects innovation performance and acts as a mediator as well. In addition, the findings proved that distrust moderates on the link between CRMCs and customer engagement. This research adds to the marketing management theory and practices and highlighted the role of CRMCs in achieving innovation performance. It explored, considering the data base collected from SME owners and managers, the mechanism of innovation performance achievement through CRMCs and customer engagement. CRMC improvements allow businesses to have sustainable development and a better integration in the market.

    Development of a Green Competency Matrix Based on Civil Servants' Perception of Sustainable Development Expertise

    This paper analysed the responses of 242 civil servants collected during a survey for public authorities personnel with management or executive responsibilities. The survey focused on the perception of respondents regarding the key competencies and the utility of the sustainability development expert occupation (SDE). Based on the assumption that the responses were influenced by multiple factors, the impact of perceptual theory, agency theory and sustainability theory calibrated the analysis of the collected data. Cronbach's alpha was used to test the reliability of the received responses and multinominal logistic regression with a single dichotomous variable (Regulation Awareness) and several continuous predictor variables (Specialization, Knowledge, Attributions and Competence) was employed to determine to what extent the SDE occupation would contribute to the implementation of sustainable development policies. This paper argues that the 'green' competency matrix appropriate for the implementation of sustainable development policies should include executive, compliance promoting, ethical and reporting competencies. The creation of a green competency matrix is an important step toward changing the organisational culture of the public or private sectors to achieve sustainable and reliable development. This research can help organizations and public authorities understand where their efforts should be focused to efficiently incorporate sustainability development into their systems.

    Digital Revolution and Digitization Process to Promote AIS as a Vector of Financial Performance

    Nowadays, many businesses recognize the importance of digitization as a strategic advantage to maintain competitiveness. As a result, current research aims to investigate three significant factors that influence digital transformation: digital innovation (DI), digital orientation (DO), and the accounting information system (AIS). These factors are supposed to impact the financial success and performance of firms. The objective of this study is to examine the positive association between digital orientation and financial performance (FP) and to explore how the AIS mediates this relationship. Additionally, this paper investigates the moderating role of digital innovation in the relationship between digital orientation and financial performance. To collect data, a quantitative method was employed using a random sampling technique. Data were collected via a questionnaire survey from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in China, with a sample size of 550. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and a bootstrapping technique with 5000 iterations were used to test the study hypotheses. The findings of this study indicate a positive link between digital orientation and the financial performance of organizations. Furthermore, the results confirm that the AIS acts as a mediator between digital orientation and financial performance. The outcomes also demonstrate that digital innovation plays a moderating role in the relationship between DO and financial performance. This paper contributes to the existing literature on digital transformation by providing a deeper understanding of the aforementioned antecedents of the digital revolution (DO, AIS, and financial performance) and how they should be integrated within digitalization settings to achieve financial performance.

    Do Investors Overreact to COVID-19 Outbreak? An Experimental Study Using Sequential Disclosures

    This paper aims to investigate market participants' reactions to sequential information, presenting firm-specific news and market-wide information. Experimental study takes place in the COVID-19 pandemic era, as market-wide information representation. We also provide firm-specific information in the form of company fundamental information. The results show that participants, as representatives of retail investors, do not overreact to COVID-19. The recency effect dominates their decision-making. Neither firm-specific information nor market-wide information can eliminate the recency effect in decision making. Investors still provide valuations based on the latest information they receive. Another interesting finding in this study is that positive framing of information cannot mitigate the effects of bad news contained therein. Our findings contribute to the study of behavioral finance and corporate disclosure strategies. From the market participants' point of view, our results describe that investors' decisions are often not based on the information content but the latest information they received. From the company perspective, this research also contributes to the corporate disclosure strategy valued by investors based on how they disclose information to the public.

    Does Technology Orientation Determine Innovation Performance through Digital Innovation? A Glimpse of the Electronic Industry in the Digital Economy

    This study aims to explore the impact of technology orientation on innovation performance in the electronic industry operating in the digital economy. This study also investigates the mediating role of digital innovation (a special type of innovation that is based on digital technologies) in the relationship between technology orientation and innovation performance. Primary data, based on perception, was collected from operational managers of electronic firms. Correlation and regression analyses were used to test the direct relationship among digital innovation, innovation performance, and technology orientation. The stepwise regression model was used to check the indirect relationship (mediation analysis). Findings revealed that technology orientation is a major predictor of innovation performance in the electronic industry. Results show that digital innovation acts as a bridge between technology orientation and innovation performance. This study investigates the nexus of technology orientation, digital innovation, and innovation performance in electronic firms. This study contextualizes electronic firms for the achievement of innovation performance through digitalization and technology orientation, which is a dire need of the current decade.

    E-Banking Convergence and the Adopter's Behavior Changing Across EU Countries

    "The concepts of internet banking and mobile banking have led to changes in people's financial behavior in terms of earning, consuming, and saving. This new concept, which entered the market quite recently, was used at the beginning of the new digital technology in various types of activities, banking operations, and nowadays these services are used by all people who want to save through banks or create new sources of income, as well as to make quick currency exchanges without going to credit institutions. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze people's behavior toward new digital technologies, e-banking adoption, and non-banking financial institutions internet services. The objectives pursued are: whether e-banking users are homogeneous in their characteristics in the EU 27 and which users have the most convergent or divergent behavior in the EU 27. Statistical data taken from Eurostat 2023 was used for the Sigma convergence analysis, the time series taken into consideration being from 2004 to 2022. The results showed that the changes in the procedural-fiscal-financial sphere are the ones that fully reflect the two principles underlying the tax evolution: digitization and simplification. These results confirm that people are adopting the new digital technology and change their behavior from consumer to prosumer. The study shows that all most categories adopted e-banking using new digital technologies when it comes to consumption and saving, with few exceptions that should be carefully supported. The economic environment becomes much more attractive and leads to investment and innovation in all areas. The digitization of all public or private services would also strengthen the administrative capacity of the whole population. Through studies, research, and future studies, it is essential to analyze and demonstrate that new digital technologies and their use could lead to the elimination of tax fraud, increased public confidence in local or central government and confidence in business. Finally, we can say that it is essential that new research in the field of digitization and e-banking use strengthens the literature reviews and explains at a higher level the answers to all research questions."

    Economic Resilience and Sustainable Finance Path to Development and Convergence in Romanian Counties

    Economic resilience and sustainable finance are two interlinked and crucial issues for development and convergence in Romania's counties increasing cohesion. These issues can contribute to sustainable and balanced growth of local and regional economies and to the reduction of inequalities in regional development. Economic resilience in counties refers to their capacity to adapt and survive in the face of unforeseen economic shocks or challenges, and sustainable finance refers to ensuring responsible management of financial resources to support long-term development and protect the environment. Identifying and understanding the significant variations in economic resilience and sustainable financing between counties is essential for the formulation of regional development policies and strategies. These variations provide valuable information about the vulnerabilities and opportunities of individual counties and guide resource allocation and investment decisions. The research provides new data and relevant information on the significant variations among counties in economic resilience and sustainable financing, using a Markov transition probability matrix and exploratory-visual method. This study on Romanian counties aims to provide valuable information for the formulation of public policies to support balanced economic development across the country. The results showed that economic diversification is essential to increase the resilience of the economy to shocks and fluctuations. Counties that have a diversified economic structure, with multiple sources of income and economic activities, are less vulnerable to the negative impact of economic or natural events. Governance and political stability are key factors in creating a favorable environment for investment and economic development. Well-managed government policies can help maintain macroeconomic stability and increase the resilience of the economy to external fluctuations.

    Educational barriers for disadvantaged groups in entrepreneurship

    Entrepreneurship on the small and medium size is considered to be the 'economy engine', at the same time it represents a reservoir of jobs. Self employment through an entrepreneurial initiative for micro business could be a way of subsistence income generation. There are plenty of educational programs focused on entrepreneurial skills, but they are mainly focused on the educated segment of potential entrepreneurs to teach them how to start a business. Specific ones are addressed to youth to access programs that are financing start-ups for bachelor degree graduates. There are also disadvantaged groups, as women, Romany, migrating, refugees, persons over 50, unemployed in rural areas, persons with disabilities that are interested in finding a source of income by starting their own business, but they are facing with limited knowledge, less self-confidence, lack of fund and not supportive attitude of the environment. The ELIEMENTAL Braking Down Barriers for Enterprise Project aims to high light the barriers of the disadvantages groups from 4 countries (Greece, Poland, Romania, UK) in staring a micro business and designing a training program. Knowing the barriers, that are considered by the studied group to be most important issue that are keeping them away, give us the opportunity to act on and to design tools for overcoming. After analyzing the results of a survey on the barriers and need of the targeted groups, it was designed a training program with two components: a training course and a mentoring to be tested on the target groups. The results of the testing process were partially unexpected from the evaluation point of view of the skills improvement. It was offered a different approach angle and new issues of concern on the training process design. The paper is presenting the results of the training and the discussions about the mentoring process.

    Emerging trends and drivers for knowledge-intensive economy

    Innovation and knowledge-intensive economy are considered crucial for addressing challenges and opportunities currently faced by Europe. The present paper aims to provide inputs for building a long-term vision aiming to promote innovation and knowledge economy for fostering smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. We analyze microdata from the 2016 Innobarometer "EU Business Innovation Trends" (Flash Eurobarometer 433), covering 14,112 companies from 30 countries in order to shed light on main drivers and results of business investments in innovation. We focus our analysis on high-tech industries and knowledge-intensive services. Additionally, expected positive impacts of innovation in knowledge-intensive sectors are explored in terms of job creation, digital economy, environment protection, health, transport, food quantity and quality, development of smart cities, etc. Our results are useful for designing an improved support for the emergence and impact of knowledge-intensive economy.

    Innovation requires creativity, risk-taking, and the ability to manage change effectively, all of which are closely linked to emotional intelligence. Individuals with high levels of emotional intelligence are more flexible, adaptable, and resilient in technological advancements and are better able to respond effectively to new challenges and opportunities. Thus, this study aims to recognize the significant role of emotional intelligence, along with the mediation of innovative work behavior (IWB) and the moderation role of cultural intelligence in the attainment of innovation performance. This is quantitative research and for data collection, a questionnaire was used in healthcare institutions. The result shows that emotional intelligence is an antecedent of innovation performance. The finding also proved that IWB mediates the linkage between emotional intelligence and innovation performance. In addition, the outcomes show that cultural intelligence strengthens the relationship between emotional intelligence and innovation performance. However, the current dynamic business world has created an urgency to understand the linkage between the employee's emotional intelligence and employee innovative performance, particularly taking into consideration the mediation effect of IWB. Emotional intelligence and innovation are closely linked, and innovative work behavior connects this link in a stronger way. This study offered a unique framework for achieving innovation performance through the nexus of emotional intelligence, innovative work behavior, and cultural intelligence.

    Exploratory study of the companies' economic performance using a social customer relationship management

    He epistemological positioning of scientific approach involves the diversity of the viewpoints of academics and specialists, exclusiveness not being considered. This paper aims to reflect own contributions to the development of management theory and management practice in Romania. First of all, the proposed scientific approach is a positivist approach, because it envisages the interposition of own reflections, an observation of what is happening in the market, an authentic presentation as it is. The main objective of this scientific research is to highlight the importance of social media as a mean of business development by creating new opportunities through promotion and a better brand visibility in the market. In the literature we have outlined a number of methods to assess the way in which companies approach the CRM: call method, the interview, the questionnaire, etc. Quantitative investigation of this paper was conducted based on assessment questionnaire, addressed to the employees of some Romanian companies. The qualitative investigation was conducted at the end of the research, based on analysis and structuring the information obtained. In this paper there were analyzed three elements: management position with the implementation of a CRM system; CRM to SCRM transition and the use of the new SM technologies in the implementation of a CRM system; applying of a SCRM system using social media platforms. As a result of the conducted study it was found that the media is one of the main trainers of public opinion, if not the main, controlling the public sphere. It conveys information, but also it controls and steers the public opinion. Thus, SM can form quickly enough media crisis to lower the public favorability for certain companies or politicians. In this way, by resorting to specific Social Media tools, the companies can obtain crucial information for evaluating the consumer satisfaction, information that would be more difficult to obtain traditionally.

    Green and Environmental Marketing Strategies and Ethical Consumption: Evidence from the Tourism Sector

    Sustainable business in the hospitality sector should be designed and restructured to offer services meant to satisfy the customers aware of the ethical behavior toward environment. Green environmental marketing strategies (GES) are based on the desire of the customers to access hospitality services with zero or a less negative impact with the adaptation of greening activities. Therefore, this research aims to explore the direct effects of green environmental strategies on ethical consumption and the indirect influence of green marketing and its mediating effect between green environmental strategies and ethical consumption links. Additionally, this research also reveals that psychological aspects play the moderating role in the relationship between GES and ethical consumption. The data were collected from a sample of 545 respondents with the support of Saudi tourism companies, and a structural equation model was used to process them. The findings confirm the positive relationship between green environmental strategy and ethical consumption. The outcomes also corroborate that green marketing is interplaying between green environmental strategy and ethical consumption. In addition, this study validates that psychological aspects strengthen the link between GES and ethical consumption. This study adds to the knowledge in the literature through emphasizing the crucial role of psychological factors in improving green environmental strategies and developing ethical consumption habits among members to increase ethical consumption among tourism companies. The findings support companies from the hospitality sector implementing green sustainable services, to stimulate ethical consumption and to use their competitive advantage in green marketing strategies.
