Visionaries envision. Teachers teach. Leaders lead. But each has a need for conceptualisation and verbalisation in order to build up their capacity to gather audience, impact present time and forge the future. This essay is about alternative theoretical and practical skills, which could be of use for nurturing minds and wills towards academic endeavours with benefits for betterment of societies through foreign policy and international relations. But if proven of quality and relevance, it should also be about a personal mark on IR studies, enough to qualify its proponent as author. Therefore, I have enlisted a series of past contributions with the goal of showcasing the need for what I call Focalism. Also, I have used one classic and deciding example of focalist making of IR, applied to one of the most impressive feats of diplomacy and belligerence ever achieved: Zhuge Hidden Dragon Liang’ s diplomatic mission at the court of Sun Quan, and the subsequent victory of their joint army of 50,000 over the invading northern forces of Cao Cao of 1,000,000.

The issue of Greenland and the US militant discourse about the future of the region have been of great interest in the last years. This hasty and unforeseen evolution of events has raised a number of significant questions about the relations between the US (the preeminent Western power in the international system) and the largest island on Earth, which has the lowest population per surface ratio, but plenty of untapped resources of fresh water, minerals, carbon and green energy, an unrestricted panorama of the Arctic lights, pristine ice coastline and the potential for unchecked military multirole bases with strategic positioning. Drawing on a comparative historical analysis, this article argues that Greenland is managed with hard-power tools by the current US administration. Our findings show that this approach is part of the great power competition, where claims of historical and national security reasons are used to take over territories and population, regardless of the international law and the will of the local people. We also underline the potentially divisive policy implications for NATO and the EU.
In the interwar period, democracy, centrism and political self-moderation failed especially in Germany under the pressure of totalist values brought forth by the extremes of Nazism and Communism. The Republic of Weimar, despite its good promises and expectations, crashed under the joint actions of the exceptionalists of the day, Hitler and Stalin, and the world experienced the losses, destructions and horrors of a second global war. Riden by the current lot of autocratic charismatics, the new wave of Weimarisation tends to engulf the EU in a struggle for survival. The bitter lesson of WWII was that democracy is given a chance only after the systemic failures of offensive war. In order to Make Europe Good Again, the EU citizens do not need MEGA solutions promised by illiberalism but a comeback to commitment and respect for peaceful resolution of differences.
